SL Colonies has a full player driven economy. From start to finish. World builders are able to create their own coin by minting. This requires their players to gather copper, silver and gold ores. Smelt them into ingots. Smith them into the form of coin shapes and then mint them using a worlds official minting press.
Other than that, there is an official coin, known simply as coin or SLC Coin. This coin is not minted by players directly, but is seeded by the system through marketplace purchases, completing quests and so on.
World custom coins usually base their conversion rates (if they allow conversion of their coin to and from SLC coin) on the SLC official coin. For example, some trade for 1:1, or 1:10 etc.
Coins in SLC come in a variation of Copper, Silver and Gold just for visual display on the HUD.
The table below shows the denominations and how they will show on the HUD to players. But essentially, 100 copper is worth 1 silver and 100 silver is worth 1 gold coin. Which means, you would need 10,000 coins (copper) to consider you owning 1 gold worth of coins.

Trading Coin
To give coins to other players, you can do so by clicking on the coin bag icon on your HUD. This will scan for players around you and allow you to pick a player you would like to give coin to. Simply type in how many coin to give, and hand over the coin.
This is not considered safe for player trading agreements. You are better off using the “Trade” function within the Inventory Bag icon. Which allows you to confirm what items you are getting in return for the coin you are giving the other player. This is a game, we as the creators will not get involved in RP piracy or help you get your coin back.
An even safer option for trade is to buy directly from players vendors, where you can select what you are purchasing directly and see how many coins you are going to spend prior to purchase.
You will still need to make sure you know what it is you are buying from the vendor. Check the items stats if you are purchasing consumables.
Making L$ with SL Colonies
Sorry, SL Colonies is a full roleplay system. And for this reason, we do not have any way for a player to convert SLC Coin or Custom Coin into L$. We do not wish to become a system where players bulk farm to sell in L$ vendors or on the Second Life Marketplace.
While we appreciate some players like to try to make a living from these types of systems that allow L$, it takes away too much from actual roleplay. This is not the system for you if that is your intention.
If you wish to try sell a service for L$ in return for SLC Coin or SLC virtual goods, that is your perogative. However, we warn players to be careful when considering to do this, as we cannot offer refunds or investigate scams of this nature. Make sure you trust who you are dealing with.
There are legitimate ways to make L$ off of SL Colonies. Including through our custom API scripts, where if you know scripting and some mesh design, you can make items that integrate directly into SL Colonies crafting and questing systems that expand on the system. These are encouraged and help make SL Colonies a better system, without taking away from roleplay.
