[GATHERABLES] Sand

Sand is a new gatherable, added as part of the changes that let the brewing system have bottles. You gather it with a small basket and it goes to the smelter, and it regrows about a second after you take it, so there is no waiting between pulls.

What it feeds

Sand is a smelter material. That is the whole of it: gather sand, take it to a smelter, and the glass comes out the other side. Bottles for the brewing system are the reason it was introduced.

Setting it up

Unpack the crate, place the sand anywhere on your land, and delete the crate once you have the contents out.

The owner menu

Long left click the sand as its owner and you get the owner’s menu rather than the player’s:

  • Reset
  • Hover text — turn it on and you can see the item’s text above it, including how many are left to gather at that spot.
  • Name — set what it is called.
  • Security
  • Spawn points

Spawn points

This is the one worth setting up properly. Normally a gathered item regrows where it was. With spawn points, it does not: when you gather from it, the next one appears at the next point you have set instead.

Set a point where the sand is standing, move it somewhere else on your land, and set another. From then on a gather may regenerate at either one. There is no limit on where they go — higher up, rotated, tucked into a bank or a shoreline, whatever fits the build. It stops one player standing in a single spot working the same patch all day.

Security

The same four levels as everything else: public, colony, group, or owner only.

Gathering it

You need a tool, in the same way clay does. Attach a small basket and gather. Without one, the sand tells you it is checking for the appropriate tool and names the one you are missing — the message is there to be read rather than puzzled over.

The gather itself is fast, and the regrowth is faster: roughly a second, then it is back. In practice that means you keep going without a pause, which is deliberate — sand is meant to be quick to accumulate for a smelter run.

Small baskets come off the basketweaving station, so keep one in reserve if you are planning a long session.

Making it fit

Fully modifiable, like most of our items. You can rename it and put it wherever you like.

Inside is a master prim. Edit the object, unlink that prim and move it into a mesh of your own if you want the sand to match the theme of your land. Two rules hold: the scripts must stay inside the main prim, and that main prim has to be one created by us. A prim of your own making will not run them.

If you want it in bulk

The video calls a bulk sand station “something we’re going to make later”. It exists now: the sand pit fills over 24 hours and hands over 240 sand in one click to a large bag, the way the water tower does with a barrel.

The two are worth having side by side rather than choosing between. A sand deposit is the fast one — a gather a second, no waiting, one point of a small basket each time. The pit is the patient one: nothing all day, then a day’s worth at once for a single point of a large bag.
