The field is the dry-crop plot: wheat, barley, oats, corn, potatoes and the fibre crops. Five stages from bare soil to a harvest, and a week of waiting in the middle.
Three sizes, one field
The three sizes are the same field with different yields. The stages, the tools and the growing time do not change.
| Harvests per cycle | Working range | |
|---|---|---|
| Large Field | 10 | 15 m |
| Medium Field | 5 | 15 m |
| Small Field | 1 | 5 m |
A small field takes exactly as long to grow as a large one and gives you a single harvest for it. Buy the size that matches the land you have, not the patience you have.
The five stages
1. Plough — needs a plough. 50 energy, and about seventy seconds of work. The topsoil peels back as you go and the tilled rows underneath appear, so you can always see whether a field has been worked.
2. Seed — needs a seed bag and one lot of seed. Click and you are offered whatever seed you are carrying:
wheat · barley · oats · corn · seed potato · rye · millet · sorghum · buckwheat · spelt · soybean · cotton · flax · sugarcane · agave
Whichever you choose is what grows, and what you harvest.
3. Water — needs a clay jar and one water. Not a clay pot. The jar.
4. Growing — seven days. Nothing to do and nothing to spend.
5. Harvest — needs a sickle and a harvest bag.
Each stage pays 10 Farmer crafting experience.
The video is out of date on one point. It shows harvesting into small baskets. Harvesting now takes a harvest bag instead.
Harvesting
Anyone with a sickle can harvest a field, including a field that is not theirs. Theft is part of the roleplay. If you are farming land you care about, be there when it ripens.
Each harvest returns a randomised amount, and you have a chance of getting some of your seed back at the same time. Once you have taken the last harvest the field resets to bare topsoil and you choose a crop again.
Owner controls
Hold a left click on the field and release for the owner menu — spawn point, and the hover-text toggle that turns the growth and working text on or off.
