[ESSENTIALS] Colony Sign

A colony is the group you belong to in SL Colonies — a family, a faction, a bloodline, a house. The colony sign is where one is declared: it stands at your gate, shows who leads it and how many have joined, and lets a passer-by ask to be let in.

You get one free with a region server. Spares are in Essentials.

Why a colony and not a group

Land groups already exist, so the question is fair. A colony is different in three ways that matter:

  • It needs no rez rights. You can bring people into a colony without handing them build permissions on your land.
  • You belong to exactly one. Nobody is in two colonies at once, and nobody leads two. That is the whole point — a bloodline you can quietly also belong to is not a bloodline.
  • It shows. Every member wears the colony in their meter title, above their head, wherever they go.

Set an object’s security to Colony and only your colonists can use it, without a group tag and without a role.

The title above your head

A member’s meter reads colonist of <your colony>. Name yours The King’s Guard and it reads “colonist of The King’s Guard”; name it Kings Guard and it reads “colonist of Kings Guard” — the article is yours to include or leave out.

Colonist is only the default. From the website you can set any member’s title individually, so the same colony can carry a king, a head vampire, a quartermaster and thirty colonists.

If a change does not show up straight away, detach your meter and put it back on.

Running it from the website

Log in at slcolonies.com and open My Colony.

  • Colony chat — a private channel for your members, on the website rather than in local. It is encrypted; we cannot read it from the database.
  • Edit colony — change the name and description whenever you like, and set the picture by pasting a texture UUID. Right-click your texture in inventory, Copy asset UUID, paste it in.
  • Requests — anyone who presses Request to join on your sign appears here to accept or decline.
  • Members — set individual titles, or remove people.

Renaming the world to suit yours

Two more things under My Colony are worth knowing about, because most people never find them:

  • Colony races — every race in the game, renamed for your lands. If Dragon Born does not fit your setting, call it something that does, and that is what appears on your colonists’ meters.
  • Roles — the same for professions. A cook can be a chef, a ranger can be a knight.

Both are cosmetic and both are yours alone. They change nothing for anyone outside your colony.

More than one on a parcel

You can rez several signs, but a colony is led by one account, so a second colony on the same land needs a second account to lead it. That is deliberate — it is what stops one person quietly holding every faction on a sim.

Which is where this gets interesting: several colonies on one region can ally, feud, hold tournaments and go to war, and the sign is where each of them plants its flag.
