The Carpentry Bench turns logs into the parts every other trade builds on. At 153 recipes it is the largest catalogue in the game — the Forge, in second place, has 84 — and almost everything a colony sits on, sleeps in or swings is shaped here first.
You need a hammer, and it is not made here
Working this bench requires a carpenter’s hammer, which is forged at the Forge. Take one with you before you walk over.
You do not have to be a carpenter
Anyone can use the bench. What being a carpenter changes is what you keep:
| Carpenter | Everyone else | |
|---|---|---|
| Level 0 recipes | yes | yes |
| Anything above level 0 | yes | no |
| Recipes saved to your book | yes | no — re-enter the ingredients each time |
| Crafting experience | yes | none |
So a smelter can wander over and knock out wooden handles all day. They just will not get any better at it.
What goes in
Planks, above all. Oak, fir and maple, in small, medium and large, all cut at the Logging Station — and the oak wood scraps they leave behind. Small oak plank alone appears in 35 recipes; medium oak in 34.
Metal from the Forge. Metal loops and arrow heads.
Leather and cotton, for the upholstered furniture — leather is in 20 recipes and cotton in 18.
What comes out, and where it goes
Wooden handles go into Forge tools and weapons. And a single oak barrel is the seed of every drinks barrel in the game — whiskey, vodka, sake, red wine and white wine all start as one.
The catalogue is steep, not long
This is the thing to understand before you buy planks:
| Level | Recipes |
|---|---|
| 0 | 4 |
| 1 | 34 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 110 |
Level 3 is essentially the entire furniture range — headboards, bedframes, cushions, and the plough. Nothing goes beyond level 3, but getting there is most of the work.
Time is the other cost, and it is blunt: 128 of the 153 recipes take ten minutes each.
The four level-0 recipes
| Recipe | Makes | Time | XP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small wooden handle | 1 | 30s | 5 |
| Simple fishing stick | 1 | 1m | 10 |
| Mug | 1 | 2m | 20 |
| Leather strips | 100 | 5m | 10 |
Small wooden handle is two oak wood scraps and thirty seconds — the cheapest craft on the bench, and the one the smiths keep asking for. Leather strips is the quiet bargain: one craft, five minutes, a hundred of them.
Worth knowing
- Nothing here spoils, so there is no penalty for building ahead of an order.
- Crafting several at once raises the time accordingly — queue the ten-minute work behind anything quick.
- Furniture and decorations made here are rezzable in world, not just inventory items.
