[CRAFTABLES] Basketweaving Station

Every colonist lands with a small basket and a seed bag. Farmers get a harvest bag on top. None of it lasts forever — each one has a set number of uses in it — and the basketweaving station is the table that makes the next one.

It is cheap, it is early, and rather more of the colony runs through it than the name suggests.

Reed, and where it comes from

Reed is the material for five of the six recipes here. You gather it from reed plants out in the world, and it is about as easy as gathering gets: no tool needed, one energy, five seconds, one reed. The plant comes back roughly every five minutes.

There is no way around stockpiling it, though. A small basket is ten reed — ten separate gathers — and a large bag is fifteen. If you mean to keep a colony supplied, cut reed every time you walk past a stand of it.

The three tools

These are the ones you attach and go to work with. Every gather takes one use off them.

Small basket — 10 reed · 1 minute · 10 XP · level 0 · forty uses

This is the one you will make again and again, because it is the gathering tool for an enormous slice of the map: clay and sand, apple, orange, lemon, lime, fig, olive and cherry trees, blueberry and blackberry bushes, and collecting from chickens and pigs.

Seed bag — 5 reed · 30 seconds · 5 XP · level 0 · ten uses

The cheapest and quickest thing on the table. It holds seed so you can scatter it across your fields and plots.

Large bag — 15 reed · 2 minutes · 20 XP · level 1 · twenty uses

The expensive one, and worth it in the place it is used: a sand box will give up two hundred and forty loads to a single large bag.

The two that are not tools

Empty pouch — 7 reed · 2 minutes · 20 XP · level 0

You never attach this one. It goes to the forge, where a smith presses it together with a single ingot:

At the forge Ingredients Level
Copper coin bag 1 empty pouch + 1 copper ingot 1
Silver coin bag 1 empty pouch + 1 silver ingot 2
Gold coin bag 1 empty pouch + 1 gold ingot 3

That is where coin bags come from. A smith with a pile of ingots and no pouches is stuck, which makes this a genuinely tradeable little item.

Harvest bag — 6 reed · 1 minute · 20 XP · level 1

A large harvesting bag for a farmer’s fields. Farmers start with one.

Flax fiber, the odd one out

Flax fiber — 5 flax · 1 minute · 10 XP · level 1

The only recipe here that does not touch reed, and the best return on the table: five flax in, ten fiber out.

It is also the first step of the entire cloth chain —

flax → flax fiber (here) → linen string (spinning wheel) → linen cloth and satin cloth (loom)

— so every tailor in the colony is, one way or another, waiting on a basketweaver.

Worth knowing

  • Nothing made here spoils. Walk away and come back.
  • But an output left sitting on the station can be picked up by anyone who wanders past. Collect your work.
  • Three recipes sit at level 0 and three at level 1, so the whole table opens up almost immediately.
  • Your billhook is not made here — that one is the smith’s job, at the forge.
