The Leather Tanner turns butchery waste into workable leather stock. Five scrap hide, a unit of dung and five water become a single animal hide; run that hide back through the tanner with more dung and water and you get prepared hide, the form leatherworkers build from.
Everything it needs comes from elsewhere: scrap hide off the butcher’s block, dung from livestock pens, water from your own supply. The dependency runs both ways — nothing else in the colony consumes scrap hide, so where no one runs a tanner, a butcher’s hides are dead weight. Be aware that the compost bin wants the same dung.
Both recipes sit at level 0, so you can start on day one. Neither is quick: a batch takes thirty minutes and yields one item, so every prepared hide has an hour of tanner time and five scrap hide behind it. Stock dung and water in bulk — a working butcher will outpace one tanner.
