Everything you own has to live somewhere. This covers both storage products, the
free updater that brings older ones up to date, and My Storage on the
website — which is new, and is where most of this now happens.
Why you need it
You carry fifty inventory slots. A slot is a stack, not an item — 350
silver ore is one slot, and so is one silver ore. Fifty stacks is plenty for a
new colonist and nothing at all for a trader.
Go over it and your fatigue starts to drain. Once fatigue is gone your
energy falls faster than it should and everything you do costs more. Nothing
warns you in so many words; you just get tired sooner and never work out why.
Levelling strength with CXP slows the drain. Storage removes the cause.
What there is
| Slots | Bought with | |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack | worn, adds to what you carry | crafted |
| Storage Chest | 20 | L$ |
| Community Storage | 50 | L$ |
| SLC Warehouse | 500 | platinum |
The chest and the cabinet work identically. The differences are the slot count
and the fact that a cabinet is the one people usually share — but sharing is a
setting, and you can set either of them any way you like.
Update your old ones first
If a chest reports version 0.00, the game will not recognise it. Anything
you owned before this update needs the updater run over it once.
- Come to the store and look in the corner for the updater box. It costs
L$0 — click it and buy it. - Rez it on your own land and click it.
- It scans everything you own on that region and updates the scripts inside, one
object at a time, telling you as it goes. You only need to do this once per
region, not once per chest.
Two things it cannot fix:
- A chest old enough to still have the Casper update system in it. Send a
ticket to the support bot and we will replace it. - A chest you have broken. Rez it on the reset platform in the store and it
comes back new.
Rezzing one
Rez it, click it, and you are asked to Link or Create.
- Create makes a new storage record and asks you to name it.
- Link attaches this object to a storage record you already have — including
one showing as frozen, which is how you bring an old one back.
Give it a name that says what is in it. Food, Ores, Tools, Building.
My Storage, on the website
slcolonies.com/profile/storage
lists every chest and cabinet on your account — including the ones belonging to
your other characters — and you do not have to be standing next to any of them.
For each one you get how full it is, a bar showing it at a glance, and:
- View contents — everything inside, with the item stats.
- Move — send items to any other storage on your account, in any amount:
all, half, or a number you type. This works between your own characters,
so an alt’s chest is a valid destination without granting anybody anything. - Rename — and it changes the name in-world too.
- Delete — the contents come back to you. Nothing is destroyed.
There is also a search box across the whole page. Type iron and it shows
you which chest — on which character — is holding it. That is the fastest way to
answer “where did I put it”.
Frozen storage
A storage shows as frozen when no chest has reported it in-world recently.
You can still look inside it, rename it and delete it. You cannot move things
in or out. Rez the object again and it comes back within a minute or two — the
website may need a refresh or two before it catches up.
Frozen does not mean lost. The goods are still there, and deleting a frozen
storage still returns them to you.
Who else can get in
Set from the chest in-world, and shown on the website:
- Private — only you.
- Colony — anyone in your colony.
- Public — anyone at all.
On top of that, each storage has an access list: name individual players and
they can use it whatever the setting is. Add them from the website by name — the
name has to belong to somebody who has played, because the list is checked
against the game’s own players. You can remove anyone later, and there is an
option to apply the same person to every storage you own rather than adding
them twelve times.
The in-world menu
Left-click a chest you own:
- Stash an item — pick from your inventory and how many.
- Retrieve an item — take it back out.
- View inventory — opens the storage’s page on the website. It is for
looking, not for managing; managing is My Storage. - Change name / hover text — what shows above it.
- Security — private, colony or public.
- Reset — start the object over.
Two things that catch people out
“Somebody else is using this storage.” Only one person can be in a storage at
a time, and the lock takes about a minute to clear after the last person finishes.
Wait a moment and click again.
A chest you pick up is named whatever you called it. It no longer returns to
your inventory as SLC Storage Chest, so if you named it Blueberries that is
what you are looking for. Keep them somewhere you will find them.
Changing the look
Every one of these is customisable. There is a master prim — the yellow one —
and you can unlink the rest and swap the mesh for anything that suits your
region. Timber, stone, sci-fi, whatever you are building.
If something is wrong
Send a ticket to the SL Colonies support bot — click it at the store, or
send it an instant message — and a mentor will pick it up.
